Nail Polish - The Perfect Finish
There are quiet a few factors to get to grips with when trying to get the perfect nail polish finish, the most important of which is the base which you are painting onto. Nail Polish, Varnish & Lacquers Nail & Hand Treatments
The Perfect Finish…
If you clean your nails with a decent nail polish remover before you start anything it will remove any traces of impurities, oils or other nail products from the nail, making it a smooth base to work on. Using a nail varnish remover from one of the larger companies like Jessica Nails or OPI will add vitamins to the top layer of the nail, which will help them grow back and stay in better condition for much longer.
Buff your nails lightly with a gentle emery board to remove any nicks, ridges and other oils that sit on the top layer of the nail. If you have quite harsh ridges on the nail, Jessica Nails has the right treatment - Jessica Flawless ridge filler basecoat. The buffing process will allow for better adhesion of the polish, and a much smoother finish. Next moisturise your whole hand with a vitamin A-rich cream like Jessica Hydracreme or Hand Emulsion from Jessica Nails and wait a few minutes for this to absorb fully, once this is done you are ready to start applying the polish.
Apply a thin layer of base coat, such as the the extremely popular Jessica Nails ‘Bend Don’t Break’ Basecoat Treatment or Jessica Diamonds Endurance shatterproof basecoat (many other treatment basecoats are available from Just Beautifully) on your completely clean nails. A good thing to remember is that you should always apply thin coats, as this means you reduce the chance of flaking, also the products you add will dry much quicker!
The perfect application of nail varnish should be done in three strokes with the middle section filled in last. Always make sure you dont have too much varnish/polish on the brush, (less it better than more) and start at the base of the nail by the lunula (the whitish, half-moon shape at the base of your nail underneath the plate.) and work toward to the tip. If the colour seems to be on too thinly or see-through, wait for a minute or so, and re-apply another thin layer. Do not over do it! Recently OPI Nails have incorporated an exclusive pro-wide brush, making application to the nail easier and smoother, this is unique to OPI.
If you manage to paint any other part of your finger or nail by accident including the cuticle, soak your hands in water after the final coat has dried and it should rub off easily, alternatively you could try a colour corrector pen. Finally, apply a thin layer of Top Coat or clear polish to protect your colour. Using a good quality top coat will make the polish look so much better, and also make it last considerably longer too as it makes the polish more chip resistant.
Things to avoid…
- Do not shake the bottle, as this is likely to cause bubbles in the varnish. You should always roll the bottle in the palms of your hands.
- Do not use thick layers as they will chip faster and will require you to repeat the whole process much sooner.
