In our experience nail bar appointments can be split roughly into two categories.

There’s the cheap and cheerful, where for the price of a Nando’s you can get a full set of acrylics while distracting yourself from health and safety issues by flicking through a two year old magazine; or spa-like settings where a basic manicure may cost the same as a round of cocktails, but the service is superior and you don’t draw a blank when it comes to the names of the nail polish brands on offer.

Ok, so that might be a sweeping generalisation, but most nail bars we’ve visited do seem reluctant to stray from what are now tried and tested but slightly tired formats; however a new nail bar we were invited recently seems intent on bucking the trend with plenty of vintage style.

Inspired by the jet-set glamour of 1970’s air travel, MW Nails delivers professional treatments amongst first class surroundings thanks to windows, passenger seats and overhead lockers lifted straight from the cabin of an actual Boeing 747. Yes, an actual real life plane. The retro vibe doesn’t stop there, with MW Nails’ team of skilled nail techs sporting Pan-Am style uniforms as they file, buff and polish nails to perfection using favourites such as O.P.I and Shellac  to perform reasonably priced treatments such as the ‘Honolulu Hopper’ file and polish for toes, £16 and ‘Fiji Full Set’ Gels or Acrylics, £59.

At the Spitafield market branch of the nail bar, we were treated to the ‘Shangai Shaper’, £15 which involved my nails receiving a file and polish with a blink and you’ll miss it shade of O.P.I nail colour which left our hands looking pretty, fresh and ladylike in a way that only French manicure colours can. During the treatment the in-flight refreshments and flash of the ‘Fasten your seatbelt’ light brought plenty of entertainment to the manicure experience, but as we watched a member of staff stow away some neatly folded towels into the overhead lockers it confirmed that MW goes beyond the novelty factor and is instead the perfect mix of fun and functionality.
